Year 7 Living Rainforest Trip

Year 7 pupils recently took part in an exciting and educational trip to the Living Rainforest, where they explored one of the world’s most fascinating ecosystems. The visit provided students with the opportunity to see tropical plants and animals up close while learning about the importance of protecting rainforests around the globe.

During the visit, pupils walked through the rainforest glasshouses, discovering a wide variety of exotic plants, colourful birds and unusual insects. Guides explained how rainforests support an incredible diversity of life and play a crucial role in regulating the Earth’s climate.

Students also took part in interactive activities that helped them understand how plants adapt to humid environments and why conservation is so important. Many pupils were particularly fascinated by the reptiles and butterflies found inside the rainforest habitats.

The trip supported topics currently being studied in geography and science, bringing classroom learning to life in a memorable way. Staff were impressed with the enthusiasm and curiosity shown by the pupils throughout the day.

Overall, the visit was a great success, giving Year 7 students a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the need to protect it for future generations.

Engineering and Technologies Faraday Challenge

36 pupils from across Selwood, Oakfield and Avanti took part in the challenge where they spent the morning hearing from volunteers from industry that were there to help judge the competition. The pupils were then given their design brief; to create an innovative and sustainable product that uses batteries for a sporting activity/disabled person or child's toy. The pupils had to assign their own project managers and accountant as well as other roles within their teams. They had the rest of the day to then come up with a project, a working prototype and a 5 minute presentation.

A team from Selwood won the competition and have been put forward for regionals. When all the scores are in we'll know if we will be going to the next event.
